It’s hot and humid this December afternoon at Hawks Cay Resort as I lounge in the shade, cold beverage in hand, on our private deck behind our suite. Husband Ray is swimming in the Tranquillity pool, just meters away from me. It’s quiet — no music, no children, just the noise of the nearby ocean and the rustle of the palms as they sway in the wind. I literally don’t need to move a muscle as I can get food and beverage served right on our own deck outside our suite.
Hawks Cay Resort and Duck Key is approximately 3 hours drive south of Miami Florida and 1 1/2 hours north of Key West. It’s the perfect middle ground of peacefulness between the hustle and bustle of tourists.
At 60 acres, the resort is expansive — so large that they offer a tram shuttle service to transport you around the property should you not wish to drive. It truly has something for everyone with activities and accommodation options for couples, families and groups in multi-level villas, condo-style suites, family suites or traditional hotel rooms.
Room 3107 – Water View Lanai Guestroom – King
We stayed in a water view lanai guestroom with a king size bed located on the ground level of the main resort. A spacious 396 square feet, it was such a joy to spend time in our suite especially since we had our very own private deck overlooking the adults-only Tranquillity Pool.
If you are a regular reader of my hotel/resort reviews then you know that my pet peeve is that there are never hooks in the bathroom for your towel. Hawks Cay Resort gets top marks from me because not only is there a hook – but there were 5 hooks. Perfect to hang your wet swim gear, towel, bathrobe and more!
Another perk that we loved were the little things such as filtered cold water machines and fresh fruit served by the pool.
It’s the little things that make a great stay a fabulous stay!
Six Swimming areas – A different one for each day of your stay
There are six swimming areas at Hawks Cay Resort, and each one has it’s own special charm.
Resort Pool. Where the action is with music, entertainment, family games and events. During our time there they had live music and smores around the fire pit.
Tranquillity Pool. Adults only quiet zone, perfect for quiet relaxation with luxurious cabanas available should you want extra privacy and shade. (see featured photo)
Pirate Ship Pool. With shallow areas for the kids to splash and play completed with water slides, water cannons, fountains, and a fun looking Pirate Ship in the centre.
Coral Cay Pool. Another more traditional family friendly pool area without all the bells and whistles
Sunset Pool. Tucked away from it all in a quiet area close to the ocean.
Saltwater Lagoon. Not a pool at all, but you can certainly swim in it!
Found exclusively at Hawks Cay Resort this is an artificially enclosed lagoon, fed by the ocean the water rises/lowers with the tide. I was surprised that it was artificial since the landscaping is so natural with small tropical fish in the water and a sandy beach. They have kayak and paddleboard rentals available for your enjoyment. This is perfect if you want to enjoy the ocean but not have to worry about rough waves.
If fitness is your thing…
If you get tired of lounging by the pool, there are a multitude of fitness activities to keep you busy such as hard and clay tennis courts, Cliff Drysdale tennis program, golf putting course, sports field, watersports, beach volleyball, bike rentals, games room, fitness centre, full spa, and fishing at the marina. They even have an amazing dolphin experience program called Dolphin Connection on site. (Extra Fee)
Dining options are plenty with five restaurants located within the resort but there are many restaurants in nearby Marathon Florida as well should you wish to explore the nearby area. We had some good barbecue at Porky’s Bayside BBQ.

We had a very restful visit at Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key. The resort and location is the perfect, peaceful, “middle” between all the tourists and activity of Key West and Miami.
