The island of Singapore may not be at the top of your mind when you are planning a family-friendly fun vacation spot, but read on to see why you should add this multicultural global city to your wish list!

Singapore — The Basics

A car is not necessary, as getting around Singapore is convenient with the extensive and inexpensive Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. Staying in an IHG hotel in downtown Singapore near an MRT Station is ideal for quick access to all the major tourist sites and multiple food centres. With hundreds of stalls at each food centre, there will be plenty of delicious, inexpensive food options suitable for the pickiest of eaters in the family.

Flock to Jurong Bird Park

With a collection of more than 5,000 birds and a park over 20 hectares in size, there’s a lot to see at Jurong Bird Park. Pace yourself, but if you tire, take a ride on the monorail that traverses the park. Children of all ages will delight, as I did, at hand-feeding nectar from a cup to the colourful lory birds that fly freely through the biggest walk-in aviary in the world.

One of the latest additions to Singapore’s list of animal attractions is the Singapore River Safari. Dedicated to all things aquatic, the park has over 6,000 animals on 12 hectares. Two unique boat rides, the Amazon River Quest and the River Safari Cruise,  and the main attraction of the giant panda enclosure round out the fun.

Explore the Singapore Zoo

The award-winning Singapore Zoo has been around for over 40 years and receives more than 1.7 million visitors annually. In this open-concept zoo, each animal habitat is specifically designed with barriers that blend into the environment to give you the illusion that you are in the wild. More than 2,800 animals across 300 species — 26 percent of them endangered — call the Singapore Zoo home. For a memorable dining experience, be one of 20 guests daily and buy a ticket to the Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife — and have breakfast with an orangutan.

Singapore Night Safari for the brave

Visiting the Singapore Night Safari is an adventure for those not afraid of things that go bump in the night as glowing eyes blink in the darkness and animal growls come out of nowhere. Dim lights, and the glow of the moon and the stars overhead, light your way along the walking paths as you spend the evening with over 1,000 nocturnal animals.

Open from 7:30 p.m. to midnight, the Night Safari is next to the River Safari and the Singapore Zoo, making a visit to these three parks an easy, albeit tiring, one-day adventure.
