About RipSkirt Hawaii
RipSkirt Hawaii blends island charm with practicality, offering women versatile and stylish apparel for their adventures. With a mission to empower women on their journeys, RipSkirt Hawaii crafts each piece with quality materials and attention to detail.
The brand’s signature product, the RipSkirt, seamlessly combines the ease of a skirt with the functionality of board shorts, making it ideal for beach outings or urban exploration. Targeting adventurous women, RipSkirt Hawaii appeals to those who seek both style and functionality in their travel wardrobe.
From the RipSkirt Hawaii website:
“We manufacture primarily in China, where we work with some small, high-quality manufacturers (not the government). We have spent a lot of time in each factory and are lucky to work with some lovely people there! We do all of our product development from our Maui office in Paia, Hawaii. We are proud of what we do and how we do it! “
Rooted in the spirit of exploration, RipSkirt Hawaii embodies the essence of island living while catering to travellers worldwide.
With no retail stores, RipSkirt Hawaii is available on Amazon and online in Canada, USA, Australia, and New Zealand.

Fabric and Care Instructions
The feel of the fabric against your skin is where RipSkirt Hawaii excels. Made from 93% polyester and 7% Spandex, RipSkirt Hawaii’s clothing is crafted from premium, high-performance, moisture-wicking, stain-resistant, quick-drying fabric engineered for durability. The 4-way stretch of the fabric withstands the rigours of travel while remaining cool, lightweight, non-clingy, and breathable. The skirt has an excellent drape and is not see-through!
According to their website, RipSkirt Hawaii recommends washing in cold water on a gentle cycle with like colours and using the low heat setting on the dryer and iron. For added protection, ensure the skirt Velcro is closed (to prevent snagging other items in the wash) and place the skirt in a “delicates” mesh laundry bag before you throw it in the machine.
Now, I hate ironing and prefer to shake the skirt out after washing, smooth any wrinkles and hang it to dry. But if you find wrinkles and want to iron, RipSkirt recommends placing a cloth between the skirt and the iron to prevent heat damage and shine.

Design Features, Sizing and Fit
All RipSkirt Hawaii skirts are wrap-style (except for the sports skirt) and have Velcro at the waist, making them very versatile travel skirts.
At first, I was slightly leery of using Velcro—I was worried the skirt would open too easily or scratch my skin. Once I tried it on, I realized I didn’t need to worry. I love that the Velcro makes the skirt extremely adjustable and customizable. If I overindulge at the buffet and need extra room, I move the Velcro over a bit. Also, every skirt comes with a little piece of extra “female” Velcro to cover any “male” Velcro showing, alleviating the worry that it will scratch your skin or catch on your other clothing.
Also, based on how much extra adjustment room you have, you could wear the skirt higher up on your waist or lower down on your hips.
One feature I really appreciate is the skirt’s full wrap-style design, which allows you to easily put it on without stepping through the waistband, even if you have wet or sandy feet or limited mobility.
As previously mentioned, the fabric patterns are Hawaiian-inspired, with many bright tropical florals and patterns.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: When selecting the pattern, consider your travel style. Bright tropical florals may be more suitable for beach vacation attire than business travel.
If you spend a lot of time at the beach, pool, or tropical locations, you’ll have a wide selection of patterns. Unfortunately, you may be limited if you mainly travel in urban locations and prefer solid colours or simple patterns – they carry a solid black but no other solid colours.
The regular RipSkirt comes in 4 lengths:
- mini
- above the knee
- below the knee
- full-length
Sizes range from XS to XXL.
The Length 1 and Length 2 skirts have kick pleats in the back, adding a slight flare and making the design more attractive than a rectangular piece of fabric wrapped around your waist. They also include side pockets – sized to hold a cell phone.
Length 3 has side slash pockets, a tapered silhouette, a curved front flap and small pleats at the waistline.
- Easy-on Easy-Off: quick wrap design with velcro closure.
- Quick-dry and wrinkle-resistant, custom fabric.
- Handy Pocket
- Travel-Friendly
Length 4 also has side slash pockets and a tapered silhouette.
RipSkirt Hawaii also makes sports skirts, sun robes, tops, and sundresses.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: Before deciding on the size/length/pattern, refer to the size guide online, use a measuring tape, and be realistic about where, when, and how you will wear the skirt.
I had initially purchased a size small, length 1, which fit perfectly. But then I decided that although the length was great for the beach, it was a bit short for urban touring unless I wore a pair of slip shorts underneath, which I didn’t want to do. Also, I know I will overindulge in pastries (right?!), so, easy peasy, I returned everything and moved up to a size medium, length 2. There is a little bit of extra Velcro that shows on the outside, but as I mentioned earlier, I just covered it with the additional piece they provided with my skirt, and now I have extra room for adjusting the length and the width.
I now own one black length 2 skirt and one neutral black/beige length 2 skirt, which I can wear from day to night with a black top or tank – dressing the outfit up with some jewellery or a shawl.
- Easy-on Easy-Off: quick wrap design with velcro closure.
- Quick-dry and wrinkle-resistant, custom fabric.
- Handy Pocket
- Travel-Friendly
PRO TRAVEL TIP: The length 1 or length 2 skirt would also look great worn over a pair of leggings if you need to dress more modestly.
As a frequent traveller, I’m impressed with the performance qualities of the skirt, the versatility in design, and the ease of care. The fabric feels great against my skin, and the seams are sewn beautifully, demonstrating the high quality of construction. It packs small and is lightweight. The skirt is versatile enough for various occasions, from relaxing at home to running errands or going out for dinner. On vacation, I can wear it over my bathing suit at the beach or in the cruise ship’s dining room with a cute tank top and shawl. As a capsule wardrobe item, the skirt can be easily washed and dried overnight, making it convenient for multi-day trips.

Does the RipSkirt Hawaii Skirt make it onto our essential travel packing list?
Yes… yes, it does. I can see why RipSkirt Hawaii fans have huge skirt collections in their closets and why the hangtags attached to skirts say, “Live like you’re on vacation.”
Special thanks to RipSkirt Hawaii for providing the images for this article. All opinions shared in this article are entirely my own. This is not a sponsored article – I purchased my two skirts.
