Suppose you’re planning a trip to Mainland Greece. In that case, you might be torn between having to decide to go to Athens vs. Thessaloniki – the two largest cities of Greece.  They both have a lot to offer regarding history and culture, and there are vital differences between them.

If you’re a history lover—choose Athens.

Erechteum porch acropolis

On a one-day trip, you can easily tour the Propylaea, the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion. However, many other archaeological wonders and important ruins are in Athens, like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, and the ancient Agora.

If you want a more upbeat experience… choose Thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki Greece

To experience a very different part of Mainland Greece, visit Thessaloniki. It’s heavily skewed towards locals and is dominated by young people because the largest university in Greece is located here, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The city has a unique and hip vibe, which makes it perfect for offbeat city breaks.

Athens’ most famous landmark is the Acropolis, a temple built in honour of Goddess Athena in the 5th Century BC. There’s also the upmarket Kolonaki area and downtown Ermou Street for the shopaholics. One of the best places to buy practically anything is at the flea market of Monastiraki Square.
