Author M’Liss Hinshaw shares 4 can’t-miss San Diego food places: a Thai restaurant, a classic deli, a beloved bakery, and a Louisiana café.
San Diego, California’s food scene boasts a diverse array of restaurants across the city, and I am always on the lookout for independently owned eateries. In fact, my list continues to grow and depending on my mood, I always find just the right place. From casual to fancy, I have found everything from sloppy sandwiches to butter-dripping pastries and spicy shrimp. When the need to explore food options happens, my top choices are sure to please your palate.
Here are my 4 San Diego Food Places Not to be Missed

Evan’s Deli and Brew
Deciding which sandwich to order will be the most challenging part at Evan’s, and you might want more than one.
Begin your day at Evan’s Deli and Brew with a tasty and juicy cheesesteak sandwich, which will satisfy your sandwich cravings. Located in a shopping center in Point Loma, this no-frills deli serves a selection of sandwiches loaded with ingredients of your choosing. On the advice of a food-centric friend, I ordered a cheesesteak sandwich with white American cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms. Each bite was delicious with the hot-off-the-grill sandwich fillings on an Amoroso roll – a Philly must-have. Other sandwiches like the torpedo were stacked with meat and Italian dressing dripping over the roll. There are many more sandwiches and burgers I can’t wait to try.

Bud’s Louisiana Café
Southern food on the west coast with lively flavours and true New Orleans selections.
An old-time favourite of mine is Bud’s Louisiana Café in Kearny Mesa, and anticipation builds looking at the menu. Located in a commercial area, the restaurant stands out with Cajun and New Orleans-style food. One dish I regularly order because it’s consistently good is shrimp and grits made with their Creole seasonings. Many mouthwatering dishes are served, including seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, po-boy sandwiches, and, to top it off, beignets. You will come away full and satisfied. As a reminder, please note that reservations for Mardi Gras must be made well in advance.

Koon Thai Kitchen
There are Thai restaurants and then there’s authentic Koon’s Thai Kitchen.
Stepping into this Thai restaurant is most inviting and even a bit whimsical. From the bicycle with flowers in the basket to the hanging lights that resemble crystal spheres, the atmosphere is set for a relaxing meal.

I arrived before the noon lunch crowd, and once seated, the server used her expertise to explain the menu and, more importantly, spice levels. Admittedly, on a day when I felt under the weather, I ordered Pad Kee Mao (flat rice noodles with garlic, basil and fresh chilli), and my husband ordered Yum Pla Tod (crispy fried fish), which was beautifully presented with lime leaves, carrots and mint. It was an Instagram moment. The restaurant offers a new line of craft beers, brewed to complement the imaginative tastes and menu items. Undoubtedly, when we left the restaurant, the healing powers of the food were working!

Wayfarer Bread
Fresh out of the oven, crunchy baguettes, fermented sourdough bread and buttered pastries always please at Wayfarer Bread.
Hearty breads and delicate pastries shine at this La Jolla establishment. From the minute it opened in 2018, people lined up to buy freshly baked items from this craftsman-style looking house. Owner Crystal White brought her years of experience in bread and pastry-making to bake exclusively with organic and fresh ingredients. One of the most anticipated and popular pastries is the Kouign Amann, which is made up of layer after layer of butter swirled around caramelized dough. The bakery has evolved by selling their own pre-made sandwiches and pizzas, with the selections changing weekly. Load up with a box of croissants, fruit-filled pastries and a loaf of crusty bread and head to one of the nearby beaches. Truly, you will have the best day.
