I have driven on the 401 both east and west – many, many times and saw the sign for The Big Apple — yet kept driving. After a trip to the Thousand Islands, we decided we would finally stop in and check it out. Driving into The Big Apple and seeing farm animals, including rabbits, sheep, and llamas…then, walking up to the front door, listening to the tunes of one of my favourite country singers, Brian White, playing in the background, this country girl knew it was worth the wait. Inside the Big Apple, they have an old-fashioned bakery where you can see them baking the bakery wears of the day. The wall includes an actual count of how many pies, etc they have baked.
When we arrived (on a long weekend), there were more people, including bus tours, than we expected, but despite the crowds, I was surprised to see that The Big Apple not only has a quaint restaurant, and bakery—but a country store. They have several freshly baked options on their menu including pizza, Big Apple Specialties inc… -
My family and I took a scenic harbour tour with Mariposa Cruises and were pleasantly surprised.
This tour offered a unique view of downtown Toronto while looking from the deck of a boat in Toronto’s Inner Habour. On this tour, we saw the Toronto Island Airport and as a result, a few of the passing planes landing and taking off overhead, the well-known centre island, as well as a few other islands including Ward’s Island, Algonquin Island, Olympic and Mugg’s Island. We also saw a unique view of the Redpath Sugar Refinery, Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, and Roger’s Centre.
Tips for your best Mariposa Scenic Harbour Tours experience:Ask in advance where the person narrating the tour sits. We tried to be one of the first onboard and grabbed a comfy table for our group but one of the people in the neighbouring tables talked very loudly and despite some polite ‘shushes’ didn’t get the hint. When we moved up to the upper level, we could not only hear the narrator we also had a much better vie…

The 1000 Islands Skydeck Tower, with a view of 400 feet high (~130 metres) offers a unique bird’s eye view of the islands. Open from April to October, with a particularly spectacular view when the leaves of the trees change colours, this tower, with three viewing levels, “is the perfect view of the waterways below” explains Konrad, the new owner of the SkyDeck in the Thousand Islands.
After only a short, 40 second ride up in their elevator, you can, (if you chose to also kayak through the Thousand Islands like I did), see a 360 degree view of the waterways you just paddled through, a view of the Wolf Island, which serves as the entrance to the St Lawrence River. You can also see the romantically famous Boldt Castle that was built in in 1900. After the passing of his wife, Mr. Boldt was inconsolable and discontinued construction on the site for 70 years. Still, the show must go on. “This past Fourth of July, we were able to watch their fireworks from the tower.”

I’m a woman and I love beer.
Not a Coors Light or a Budweiser, sorry boys.
My expectations are high.
I expect the type of beer that wows me with its overwhelmingly bitter taste, has the super flashy label and a funny saying underneath the bottle cap…a beer that makes me laugh out loud. As I said, I like beer—and I am a woman. So, when I heard the Toronto Festival of Beer had over 200 options in beers, I jumped at the opportunity for some suds. I was ready to be wooed.
200 beers are tempting but I wouldn’t go to just any random, stuffy bar for them either. Location is important. Luckily, for 2013, the annual festival held in July was outside, at the Exhibition Place in Toronto. Easily accessible for me with public transportation, and on grounds that I usually enjoy because of the unique architecture and well-designed lawns, the location worked for me too.“An empty stomach is not a good political advisor”
